What if the World Were a Village?

Audience: Preservice teachers of grades K-8

Expected time: 60 minutes

Overview of Module: Students will use ratios and proportions to study world population demographics. Students will represent the data in table and graph form using construction tools and a computer spreadsheet.

Activities:

  • Student Direction Sheet - General directions for activity and follow-up questions
  • Activity 1 - Men and Women (detailed explanation with examples)
  • Activity 2 - Places of Origin
  • Activity 3 - Age
  • Activity 4 - Land Goals

Goals:

  • Students use ratios and proportions to solve real world problems.
  • Students use tables and graphs to display data.
  • Students apply appropriate units and tools to construct a circle graph.

Prerequisites:

  • Students need basic knowledge of ratios and proportions, angle measurement, and the use of construction tools.
