The Earth's History in a Day: A Geologic Clock

Audience: Preservice K-8 teachers

Expected time: 2 hours

Overview of Module: Students will use proportional reasoning and principles of measurement to construct a 24-hour clock that proportionally represents the geologic history of the earth.

Goals:

  • Students collect and analyze data.
  • Students apply concepts of ratios and proportions in a problem solving situation.
  • Students use measurement tools to represent data on a circle graph.

Prerequisites: Students need basic knowledge of time, ratio, proportion, angle measurement, how to use a spreadsheet, and how to use a statistical software package.
