..

Audience: Preservice teachers of grades 6 -12

Expected Time - 60 - 120 minutes plus homework and choose one or all the activities

Overview These activities are intended for use in a methods class and include some instructional and technological strategies. This module is used to model classroom procedures. Although a prior knowledge of exponential functions is assumed, Activity 0 could be used as a review.
Activity 0: Review
Activity 1: M&M Activity
Activity 2: Chilly Experiment
Activity 3: Exponential Growth - Analysis of Some Real Data (Homework)

Goals:

  • Students will explore exponential functions.
  • Students will perform experiments, collect data, and use the data to create a function to make predictions.
  • Students will recognize graphical and algebraic geometric transformations of exponential functions.
  • Students will graph exponential functions in the form
  • Students will use a variety of technologies.
  • Students will experience a variety of classroom strategies.
Prerequisites:
  • A prior knowledge of exponential functions is assumed.
  • This is not intended to be an introductory lesson.
